Happy New Year!

Hope you all reading this have a prosperous year.

Anyone here seen Digimon Beatbreak? I've watched the first two episodes, and so far is alright, I guess. The tone seems to try and be plenty dark with Digimon outright attacking humans from the get go. I am still waiting for how characters develop in the series. At times it feels like it wants to outdo Tamers in pushing for dark situations.

About the central Digimon used, at first the design of Gekkomon was a bit alarming when seeing it for the first time, thinking creators would go for more edginess than what Digimon in general ones already known for it in most designs, but once I saw him in action, he grew in me. Still prefer Gammamon's design in comparison, however.

(That's because the triceratops is my favorite dinosaur, but I digress.)

And then there's the rest of the cast in said Monsters. Not sure about it, seems most have a plain look to them, specifically ones like Wolvermon who is my favorite by far, but like I said, her look seems lacking.

Still, she's my favorite of the ones shown so I drew some fanart of her:

Anyway, I am pressing on till I can learn more about everything going on.

It pains me that I couldn't make the first half of the story as strong and funny as the rest (and therefore no one might get to the jokes I love the most orz), but that's okay, everything's a learning experience, etc, etc, and also I expected this to be 4-5k words and it's nearly 13k by now so let's leave it at that!!

In general, this has been an interesting exercise for me because while I have written OT3s, OT4s and OT5s in which everyone loves everyone else equally, this is the first time I write a polycule where some of the relationships are not shared with everyone else. This canon just has so many lovely ships, it worked out that way. Also I'm surprised no one sees the potential in Kafka/Reno/Narumi, with the competitiveness between Reno and Narumi, and how their different approaches and ways to care about Kafka. This might just be my headcanons talking, though XD

It’s the NYE concert season, aka time to keep Kouhaku on TV while completely ruining my Youtube recs in the name of catching all dozen or so Taiwanese NYE concerts. At one point I had 6 different streams open at once.

I saw this import FAQ being linked in the

dw_maintenance comments for how to import into Dreamwidth, if that's the option you choose. So I take it this is working again, I remember there were issues a couple of years back, but better act quickly before that's no longer the case.

You will never guess which fandom is included in my sign-up... and which canon I wrote a canon promo comment for ;D Haha. I'm actually signing up with tiny beloved polyships in 3 fandoms this time (K-9, Wind Breaker, Kaijuu No. 8) and I'm seriously excited about receiving any of them. It's the first time I do a sign-up like this haha, in that normally I try to be serious or close enough, but instead this is just me kind of jumping around about "THEM" whichever THEM it happens to be about XD :D I'm excited. It's also the first time I sign up for an exchange so early I think!! Normally I procrastinate until dangerously late because I worry about forgetting something. I also linked to the K-9 primer in my request... XD

Anyway, I love

candyheartsex (and its predecessor

chocolateboxcomm), it's a chill exchange with a small minimum (300 words fic or podfic, art) that reveals on Valentine's Day (but doesn't have to be valentine-themed, at all). Because of the low word count maybe, there's usually a fantastic treating culture around it, and it's just sweet and delightful fun all around. I'm really glad to be participating this year! I'll have to remember to check in a few days that I can match as well. I see BNHA and Wind Breaker people are starting to sign up so it should be fine :D Maybe see you there??

Incidentally, years ago I pledged to make a post there as part of the snowflake_challenge, which I thought would be about Hawks and DabiHawks, and although I'm ahem 3 or 4 years late I'm glad I have done it now :D K-9, K-9, K-9!

Miko, Shiori, and Hinako
This Monster Wants to Eat Me, Episode 13 (Season Finale)

It wasn’t really a great year for anime. I wasn’t much into the mainstream anime. (The shows were OK, but I didn’t have lots of enthusiasm for making time to watch them.) I don’t think there are any shows I need to have in my personal library. But if I were to rewatch a show, the following series would be at the top of the list.

1. This Monster Wants to Eat Me
Oh, hey! Something that isn’t an isekai, an adventurer quest, shonen action, or a high school rom-com! This fantasy drama had me guessing every episode – and I cared about the characters. I liked the art, direction, dialog – and story.

2. A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof
Perhaps I needed something lighthearted. Shaft is a great studio, and they did an excellent job directing and animating this fluffy comedy. And I have a soft spot for ninja girls. Plus, Shaft can do comedy. (Can you say, Pani Poni Dash?)

3. May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Scarlet, The Lady of Beatings, is just so much fun to watch. And the villains deserve every fistful they get. So satisfying.

4. Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
Well, I’m a big fan of The Fruit of Grisaia and character designs by Akio Watanabe – so a sequel is a no-brainer for me. Phantom Trigger isn’t as good as predecessor Fruit/Labyrinth/Eden, but the anime succeeds as a guilty pleasure. The characters are similar to their predecessors.

5. I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!
Just plain fun. Liam is wildly successful in spite of all odds and players against him. He and his poor fiefdom deserve all the wins they get. The first episode was heartbreaking, but things turned around after that.

So it snowed a couple inches last night but I HAD to get my meds. Have I mentioned my parents live up a large hill? (My own road is even steeper but if I slip there so what, there's no one on it, here I'll skid out into the main road.)

So off I go, get halfway down, spin and now gravity is sucking me down the hill sideways. Well this is fun. Brakes don't work so well when you're going sideways. I did try to ditch it into the forsythia. Luckily I did get stopped before I was on the main road or in the hedgerow. Also luckily no one was coming. Other than that, the trip was fine and now we have the last do your goddamn job for 2025

1. I got pizza at our favorite place, XXL pepperoni (also not doing their job I did NOT check before leaving) Want to know how much pepperoni there was? NONE (I fixed that in post)

2. I get to CVS. They have my meds NOT my needles. Why not? oh we can't tell you that here we cant see that information in this system (it's a lie. I know they can. Mine has this system and they can but this place is huge so they don't want to waste time). I get in the 'we can tell you why we fucked up' line, takes forever. I said maybe you didn't transfer it. No we did. Then WHY isn't it filled? She shrugs, doesn't answer and says can you wait 15 minutes? yes I can. (I know why, everyone is doing what I'm doing, using the last day before the deductibles reset tomorrow and they're swamped.

I get my damn needles, I go to Home Goods, clean up on the Christmas discards (they're all over valentine's day which isn't too bad. Dollar Tree has all the gardening stuff out. yeah sure.

What I Just Finished Reading:

Poorly Made and Other Things - Horror anthology by one person set in his Edenville series. It was pretty good.

To Die Once - a Maisie Dobbs mystery which I haven't read one of these in a while and this is...slow. It's way more about the effect of war on the English people (who were still recovering from WWI) than it's a mystery

Tell Tale Treat - another paranormal mystery with another protagonist ripe for being bitch slapped, wasn't a bad mystery

What I am Currently Reading:

Keeping the Secret - a short thing about the WAVS in WWII

Murder Made Her Wicked - historical mystery set in Wellsley, really good so far

The Witching Hour - by Heather Graham. Missing children but no one will do a search of the woods because there's no proof other than the FBI things its there (a paranormal FBI team) eye roll. might DNF this arc (but this is the series that did what I tried to do in the early 90s with paranormal mystery and I was laughed at)

Been feeling under the weather during this very last day of the year, seems my flu-like symptoms will kick in as they do yearly, despite me taking precautions. Anyway, have a Pluto sketch from the Manga/Anime series inspired by a story arc from Osamu Tezuka. I am about to finish with the Anime itself, and its pretty intense. You should check it too. Naoki Urasawa also worked on Monster as well.

Prince Julius von Pallistan and Scarlet El Vandimion
May I Ask For One Final Thing? Episode 13 (Season Finale)

I’m a romantic, and I always am on the lookout for couples who find love and happiness in the midst of generally tempestuous circumstances. Here are my couples of the year.

1. Scarlet El Vandimion x Prince Julius von Pallistan, May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Prince Julius has carried a torch for Scarlet for years, while Scarlet is oblivious. Scarlet sees Julius’s playfulness as adversarial. Yet, Julius is the only person who accepts Scarlet for who she truly is – and laughs every time Scarlet shows her colors, while everyone else is dismayed. In actuality, these two make a great couple. Julius is a really good guy.

2. Philia Adenauer x Prince Osvalt Parnacorta, The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom
This is another one-sided romance, initially. Philia is too socially immature to recognize Osvalt’s honest affection. But she’ll come around. Osvalt is a really good guy.

3. Melphiera Marchalrayd x Duke Aristide Rogier do Galbraith, Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!
What I liked about this series is that the author didn’t waste any time getting this couple to become a couple. The Duke proposed in episode 2, and the couple were officially engaged in episode 4. And the Blood-Mad Duke and the Voracious Villainess are a fine couple. Aristide is a really good guy.

4. Princess Amelia Rosequartz x Akira Oda, My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds That of the Hero’s
Akira is too much of a loner to be in relationship – or so I thought. He surprised me in episode 7 by making a vow to Amelia and declaring his love. So they are officially a couple – and I am happy with that.

5. Marie x Kazuhiro Kitase, Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!
Marie and Kazuhiro are a wholesome couple, sharing adventures in two worlds – and enjoying themselves immensely. Happy couples are fun to watch.

May I Ask For One Final Thing? Episode 13 (Season Finale)

1. Scarlet El Vandimion, May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Scarlet is simply too much fun to watch. She is intelligent, beautiful, powerful... calm to the point of appearing cold... and viciously wields fists of justice. Her dry statements of fact are direct and humorous. And she always seems to be having fun. Scarlet can be my champion any day.

2. Murasaki Ikoma, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
What can I say? I have a soft spot in my heart for ninja girls. Murasaki is a classic anime ninja girl – quiet, pretty, dry-witted, stealthy, and skilled. I want her on my side.

3. Miko Yashiro, This Monster Wants to Eat Me
One would never know that Miko is a yokai who eats humans. But her love and support for Hinako is pure and unwavering. No one is more earnest than Miko. Miko sacrifices part of herself to keep her yokai side under control. Now that’s true love.

4. Mizuki Usurai, Flower and Asura
The second-year president of the Sumomogaoka High School Broadcasting Club brandishes an infectious optimism. Her upbeat and adventurous attitude move the people around her into action.

5. Amagi, I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!
Female in appearance and behavior, Amagi is the AI maid robot that serves Liam Sera Banfield. Amagi is supremely competent as well as totally loyal to Liam, even when Liam demands nonsensical (in their world) things. While Amagi has a stoic and logical demeanor, it’s clear that she truly loves Liam.

I tried hard to make a list of candidates, but the male characters this year were all bland and stereotypical, although many were likeable. There were angsty or naive overpowered protagonists. There were kind and noble – or bland – romantic leads. Would I watch an anime series centered around any of these characters? No. They’re boring.

Here are the best(?) of a boring lot: Louis Scarrel (The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl), Prince Julius von Pallistan (May I Ask for One Final Thing?), Jade Scrade (I May Be a Guild Receptionist, but I’ll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out on Time), Prince Osvalt Parnacorta (The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom), Duke Aristide Rogier do Galbraith (Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!), Prince Felix Arc Ridill (Secrets of the Silent Witch). As an aside, I believe you could swap any of these male characters with another in the set and not see any difference in the anime.
